Philip Rubin - PresidentBorn and educated in Chicago, IL, Mr. Rubin has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) and a MBA degree from University of San Francisco. He worked for two architectural firms in Chicago, including the prestigious firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. He has operated his own business, Corey Design Studio, for the past 25 years. Mr. Rubin is a co-founder of Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs. Previously, he co-founded several other organizations in Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco, including the Junior Hebrew Association of the Deaf. He also served as an officer and/or board member of many agencies and non-profit organizations such as Deaf Action Center in Dallas, Mesquite Community College Interpreter Training Program in Mesquite, TX, Deaf Counseling Advocacy & Referral Agency, based in San Leandro, CA, and Palm Springs Chapter of the California Association of the Deaf. His interests include theater, arts, reading, and travel.

Stephen Schultz - Secretary
A native of Rochester, NY, Mr. Schultz attended several schools in Rochester and has a B.S. degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, a M.S. degree from State University of New York, Geneseo, and a M.A. degree from California State University, Northridge. He was assistant professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf-RIT, director of Marketing and Sales for ZiCom Technologies, Inc., in Vista, CA, and, following his tenure on the board, became executive director of Self Actualization Institute for the Deaf, Inc., in Hollywood. He was also a licensed administrator for Westmoreland House, a board and care facility. One of the founders of the Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs, Mr. Schultz is currently an active member on the board of the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. He served as officer and/or board member for other organizations such as Deaf West Theatre Company, Inc. and Westview Services, Inc., in CA, and Continuing Developmental Services and 242 House, Inc., (NY). For recreation, he enjoys showing his blue 1959 Jaguar XK150 FHC at Jaguar Owners Club Concours d’Elegance events.

Barbara Goldman - Board Member/Acting Treasurer
Born in Chicago, IL, Ms. Goldman grew up in California where she attended several schools. She attended Pierce College, in CA, The City University of New York, in NYC, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Goldman worked for the UCLA Medical Center for 27 years, her last 11 years as a Deaf Services Program assistant and liaison/social worker. She taught American Sign Language to the doctors and staff, conducted deaf awareness/deaf sensitivity workshops, and taught CPR classes. One of the founders of the Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs, Ms. Goldman previously served on the board of the Greater Los Angeles Association of the Deaf and has had long time memberships with the Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf and the Los Angeles Chapter of the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf. Her interests include plants, cacti, pictures, travel, and interviews with deaf people who are interested in obtaining qualification for Hearing Ear service dogs.

Eileen Schultz - Board MemberMs. Schultz was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and attended schools in New York City and Philadelphia. She has a B.A. degree from Gallaudet University and a M.Ed. degree from American University. She taught at the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School, in Washington, D.C., the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge, and the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley. She also taught English at Gallaudet and special education classes for young adults. Interested in the arts, she had a supporting role as “Shirley” in the original stage play, “Tales from a Clubroom.” One of the founders of the Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs, Ms. Schultz also volunteers for Deaf West Theatre Company, Inc., in Los Angeles. A serious bridge player, she is also a cat lover, an avid art collector, and loves to travel around the world, visit museums and attend theater performances.

Richard Hill - Historian/Archivist
Born and raised in Texas, Mr. Hill was a student at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. He attended Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.C., and Pierce College in California. He worked for 24 years as a quality controller at General Motors Corporation in Detroit. He became acquainted with actress Julie Newmar and was a private mentor for 13 years to her deaf and multi-handicapped son. He held several positions within the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf and served as a delegate. He was also an event planner for Beyond Sound, a Hollywood-based [deaf] TV and Film Company. He loves to travel and is a collector of antiques and Italian dishes.

In Remembrance...Robert J. Miller, 72, passed away on December 31, 2011 due to complications from liver cancer. He was born in New York and lived in southern California for many years. An avid art collector, Bob was always delighted to welcome friends to his home in Palm Desert to admire his collection and enjoy his engaging company. Bob was a founder of Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs and served as board member since its inception in 2007. Upon his resignation from the Board in 2011, the Board of Directors presented him with a resolution. He is survived by his partner, Jim, his sister, Bernice, and many friends.

Darol F. Nance, 75, passed away on July 11, 2012 following a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in San Francisco, California. She attended schools in California and Missouri and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She also participated in the graduate school Independent Living program at San Francisco State University. Darol lived in New York City for a brief time and returned to California to work as a personnel counselor at the Deaf Self Help Job Placement in San Francisco and to serve as director of the DSH branch office in San Mateo. She was very active with various organizations in California. She was a secretary at the San Francisco Hearing and Speech Center, founder and director of the Deaf AIDS Center in San Francisco, an officer on the board of Deaf Media, Inc., in Berkeley, and also served on the Oral Deaf Adults Section of the Alexander Graham Bell Association of the Deaf. Shortly after she moved to La Quinta, near Palm Springs, Darol became one of the co-founders of Deaf Seniors Foundation of Palm Springs and served as the organization’s Treasurer until her death. Before she passed away, the DSF-PS Board of Directors presented her with a resolution. Darol is survived by her daughter, Susan; her son, Andrew and son-in-law, Jim Maloney; two grandchildren, James and Emma; her sister, Bobbie, and many relatives and friends.
